remembrance day

germany's 9-11

crystal night
echoeing with the sound of broken glass
illuminated by fire
and the night is burning
and throats are screaming
and eyes are wide with
fascination
and deadly fear

burning and looting
terror and murder
the power of masses
it begins, it begins

9th of 11th
remembrance day

1989
the wall is falling
is falling, is falling
the country is one
again

celebration night
resounding with songs and
champagne corks popping
and there's hugs and laughter
and dance and cameras
zooming in
zooming out

mass exhaltation
freedom! freedom!
we, we have cracked
the wall!

november 11th
veterans day
once was armistice day
now all american veterans are to wear their medals
one day a year
i got an air medal with three oak leaf clusters
and my national defense medal (what everybody gets)
and a vietnam service medal
i refused the distinguished flying cross while still in vietnam
it was a standard end-of-tour medal
i was leaving Vietnam, told them "forgetaboutit"
but it's still on my discharge record,
loopy
but i got no medals
no dog tags
just my long dead dad's world war two army travelling trunk
and a few old photos
and scars and memory drawings

the vets for peace give out peace medals
remembrance
forgetting
both yin and yang
circular energy
the evolution of insight
one can only hope

our wall grows higher every day
our wall betweent the super rich and the working poor
our wall between the sons and daughters of the ruling elite
and the sons and daughters who fight in Iraq

our night of broken glass is yet to come maybe
a window of opportunity opens here
two years to get our house in order
I kind of expect a Reichstag Fire

I feel like I am living in Weimar in 1929
Happy Days Are Here Again was FDR's campaign song in 1932
Still the way I feel, happy that the nightmare might be coming to an end.

carneval - the fifth season
of masks and costumes
drums and pipes
to drive out the demons
of the dark

st. martin's day
and children walk down the streets
parading with lanterns and torches
while st. martin takes his sword again
and cuts his cape to give
one half to the freezing beggar

day to bring the cattle
from their summer meadows
down into the valley
time to decorate their horns with flowers
and run downhill with them
down, down
where the music plays
