good news and bad news

Post by Doreen Peri » December 4th, 2006, 1:22 am

The good news is... I met my self-imposed deadline and compiled all the submissions into one document!!! whoohoo!

The bad news is the pdf file is 67 megs and the "reduce file size" option keeps crashing Acrobat Pro so I'm trying to figure out what to do next so I can share it with those who volunteered.

:)

Moving forward!

This is my new mantra... "It's a process"... I've been saying that to myself lately every time I get stressed... you know when stuff doesn't work right, etc.... It helps! :D

Perhaps you take what you've compiled and break it into sections (manageable bits), then the use the "reduce file size" on each section, recompiling back into one when completed? Would something like that work?

or leave it in 3 separate parts as 3 separate zips.

would that be manageable?

deb & judih...

Well I found a freeware compression utility this morning and got it down to 20 mgs. Way smaller than my zip utility could compress it. Still working on getting it smaller. There are also several other formats which I'm unfamiliar with that the app can compress it to but don't want to try them until I research what you'd need to open them.

It's 142 pages... splitting it into 3 different files won't work because it's too much work... lol...there's this text box that runs through the entire document linking all the text together. If I unlink the boxes in order to create 3 documents... well all that text won't appear... also images are in there associated with text .... it would be allotta work recreating it in 3 parts.

I can always put it up on the server for viewing but we're tight with space at the moment. Then there's http://sendspace.com which takes huge files. I could try that. I'll keep you posted.

Another thought is going through the document and reducing the size of each image separately (that's what the reduce file size option in acrobat does) for sharing purposes only and then send the final file to the people who will be printing the book on a CD with the high resolution images.

If all this sounds like sausage making... it IS! ;) Thinking aloud with my fingers on the keyboard.

What's the largest size file you can receive by email, judih?

good question!

there's the yousendit.com option, which lets you send a huge file and then there's a time limit of about 7 days (i believe) in which i (or anyone) could download.

Ray Cenacle uses it a lot. It's also great for sending sound files.
As for size limit on that site, i'll have to check it out.

http://www.yousendit.com allows 100 mb files.
For larger files, it requires registration and a fee, etc.

If the graphics are exploding the megabyte count, then maybe they could be sent separately? or shrunk to a mere hint?

it does sound like a challenge.

Judih...That site is really similar to the sendspace site I referenced above which also allows you to upload a large file and share the link for a certain time period.

That will work... my big question is do you have space on your computer to download a large file?

(Sending the images separately would be very cumbersome... and since I've already assembled them into one document, I'd rather share the document I've worked on.)

Doreen:

I've also received ( or downloaded) very large files from something called "Megaupload" ( which I think is free)-- and "Rapidshare" ( which I think is also free).

Good news! I got the file size down ti 11.2 mgs and sent it on to the others who have volunteered to help review/select the final material. Whew!

thanks all...

(And Zlatko, I'll take a look at those sites for future reference)

Looks like Cenacle's copy just bounced. Too big for his email box, I guess. ... sighh... gotta get it up on the server, I guess.

Oops. Judih's mail bounced, too. So now we know, judih, that you can't receive an 11 mg file. Question answered sorta... ;)

I'm putting it up on the server... i'll send you a link.

hi dor

my gmail could have handled it easily. It's my outlook express that's uncooperative. But the online link is great & i've just saved it on my hard disk.

Great work, dor.
looking forward to giving it my full attention.

thanks for all your intensive labour - it shows.

Doreen,

Got the file and the addendum emails, and will be putting my eye to it in the next few days. Scaling down PDF size is a hard one!! Good work being dogged :P

Raymond

on edit: When is the deadline for returning submissions with choices?
