Israel developing anti-militant "bionic hornet"
Fri Nov 17, 3:24 AM ET

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -
Israel is using nanotechnology to try to create a robot no bigger than a hornet that would be able to chase, photograph and kill its targets, an Israeli newspaper reported on Friday.

The flying robot, nicknamed the "bionic hornet," would be able to navigate its way down narrow alleyways to target otherwise unreachable enemies such as rocket launchers, the daily Yedioth Ahronoth said.

It is one of several weapons being developed by scientists to combat militants, it said. Others include super gloves that would give the user the strength of a "bionic man" and miniature sensors to detect suicide bombers.

The research integrates nanotechnology into Israel's security department and will find creative solutions to problems the army has been unable to address, Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres told Yedioth Ahronoth.

"The war in Lebanon proved that we need smaller weaponry. It's illogical to send a plane worth $100 million against a suicidal terrorist. So we are building futuristic weapons," Peres said.

The 34-day war in Lebanon ended with a U.N.-brokered ceasefire in mid-August. The war killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and 157 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

Prototypes for the new weapons are expected within three years, he said.
...

Can the US be far behind? Doubt it. Talk about ethical questions regarding "other uses" a weapon like this would/could have. Gives new meaning to the terms Hornet's Nest and Something's Bugging Me.

We were talking about this over lunch today and wondering what the hell are they thinking.

We have patriot missiles technology already working. It can be reworked and down-sized to drone size and set to launch immediately/automatically upon sensing any incoming missiles over any border of any country and destroy the incoming missiles while in the sky before they ever hit the ground, or buildings or whatever. With very little falling debris left over as well. And working them would be like playing one of those war video games that the kids are always playing.

So why not build those for protection? And use the nanotechnology to run them, thus effectively stopping incoming rocket strikes before they even over the fence into your airspace … instead building a device that will track down another human being and kill them – thus continuing the enraging and hatred and war … all to feel “safe.”

Take away – destroy – the effectiveness of their preferred weapon of choice, but spare their lives. That’s my idea.

But it’s probably not good enough for those in charge because it doesn't "kill" any one ... it only destroys an inanimate object, and apparently to feel safe you can’t just stop the incoming rockets, someone has to be killed and die as well – or it’s just not “right.”

But as for these hornets themselves – this new technology that they’re spending so much time and money on… oh my gawd! Do you know how easy it would be to get rid of those things … simple: treat them like the “bugs” they are emulating and swat the suckers!

Image

“BAM!” Bat them right out of the sky and that’s it …no more bug. And these hand held bug zappers that are sold everywhere would do the job nicely. Apparently, the people who are in charge of this hornet idea haven’t thought about that part (yet).

What the hell are they thinking about … it’s obvious.
Kill Them!

Not, stop the attacks in their tracks.

Kill them!

It’s personal.

The world is so insane it is absolutely mind-blowing. It is not the tyrant, but the nerd who will destroy humankind. Or, perhaps the lethal combination of tyrants and nerds.

And you thought African killer bees were scary? Try -- crazed cyborg hornet-bots! Trained to photograph and kill, to photograph before and after kiling. No more need for embedded journalists! No more need for soldiers who will then desert or complain, testify to human rights commissions. Love live the killer hornets! Love live mad science!
I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.

i was struck by the zoomie bugs as well,
they spied on me taking a drunk wizz in my backyard friday night
and i remembered a film by wim wenders, the end of violence
about an awesome weapon a spy gun atop a mountain above LA
supposedly to instantly penetrate crime anywhere,
but the machinations of control and its pathos are present

and terrifying

Cat's craddle such an interesting book, the science of it. Ice Nine.

Very interesting. Nobody has much respect for science fiction here. We read only good books.

I wonder if anyone here knows where Babel Fish comes from?

I read an interesting article about a new man made particle created in a cyclotron, not sure if it was true or not, but anyway it escapes and burrows its way to the earth's core and hollows it out. just a screnario maybe it was a short story. I don't know, The Grateful Dead used to have a company called Ice Nine music publishing. Maybe a coincidence.

Yeah nothing like an old fashion cluster bomb to clear the air. There is no end to our enginuity.

Ice Nine

How to destroy the Earth

I got to stop smoking tea for a while
The highs getting too high
The lows lower
Speaking of science
I read an interesting article about Polonium 210

From the NYTIMES
Puffing on Polonium
By ROBERT N. PROCTOR
Published: December 1, 2006

WHEN the former K.G.B. agent Alexander V. Litvinenko was found to have been poisoned by radioactive polonium 210 last week, there was one group that must have been particularly horrified: the tobacco industry.

The industry has been aware at least since the 1960s that cigarettes contain significant levels of polonium. Exactly how it gets into tobacco is not entirely understood, but uranium “daughter products” naturally present in soils seem to be selectively absorbed by the tobacco plant, where they decay into radioactive polonium.

That story reminds me of CITY, City, city. Keouac's only venture into sci-fi. A master computer called Mother was in control.

The killer drones are so old testament, I suppose many people would consider them more humane than a cluster bomb. Carter on TV this morning talking about Palestine as south Africa in the seventies. Made a lot of sense. To me anyway.

I got to go walk, everybody dying here, tumors everywhere. And old age.

Shut the fuck jack

I been puffing on polonium 210 for fifty two years

Oh well

Becareful, says in the book, John Hagee told me, if you bless Israel you will be blessed, curse it and you will be cursed.

I ain't cursing nobody

But I don't know if Israel is really the heart of the problem

I don't know nothing

All I know is what I read in the newspapers, and what I read here, I don't understand it.

But that don't stop me from having opinions, I got so many opinions I need three more ass holes just to express them.

fuck it
I am out of here

I am cultured out

Everyday I read the Washington Post and the NY Times

Salon.com and Slate.com

I watch The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and Charlie Rose

I fall asleep listening to the BBC overnight, I awake to Morning Edition, then all day I listen to NPR, Market Place, Diane Rehm, and Talk of The Nation, and so on and so forth...

And I think

and think

I understand

Something

Meanwhile

Peace broke out in Palestine/Israel

For awhile

And on this best of all spatio temporal objective fact worlds about us

it is more dangerous to be a woman or a child

Than a soldier
