The French Freud

Lacan is said to have said
that if a man believes his wife
is sleeping around
with other men
even if
it is true
his jealosy is pathological.

To which the patient replied
even if
what the psychoanalyst says
is true
he still is full of shit.
I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.

Paris to Nancy to Strasbourg to Frankfurt—
language of romance to language of Sigmund—
neither a citizen, neither a speaker—
how many foreigners travel these railroads?

It was January of two thousand four—
more than weeks but less than months in a new year—
more than years but less than real in the old war:
three soldier foreigners now on these railroads—

Now the far off dying mixed with blood and oil,
new world might between Tigris and Euphrates
and a new Cyrus Messiah in Persia—
ports of call foreigners explore these railroads.

He was a student reserved for the fighting.
She was a technical expert young fighter.
He was a student reserved too for fighting.
I am the foreigner now on this railroad—

and I try to watch the old world wonders pass
and notice not he flirts with her, she with him—
neither pair the same, neither pair making gain.
Three (or four) foreigners all on this railroad

with jealousies irrupting with the rhythm
hidden underneath on tracks—tracks bridging lands
of old world wars and of old world jealousies—
and now no passport from Paris to Frankfurt.

I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.
