cloud shrouds on the mountain
a desert view of city sprawl
the silence is splintered by those
dogs howling at the ambulance
abruptly awakened by someone's pain
i wonder if it is serious for a brief moment
and then the clouds close in
a rainy day

I was driving back home from the ocean yesterday and had to pull over to let the emergency vehicles pass. There was a woman holding her dog, flagging the EMTs into her driveway right off the barrier island main drag. A man came out casually to bring the EMTs inside...there were lots of EMTs who responded and the man didn't seem neglectful, but he didn't seem in an urgent rush. I wondered about the presumed someone inside who needed help. The whole scene was a case of urgent slow motion. Was the person inside perhaps DOA and thus not in need of overly rushed assistance? If so, what would the day mean for the man who let the EMTs in, or the woman and her dog who guided them in? Did they even know or care about the "Victim"--who knows? Perhaps the Victim wasn't really hurt all that bad. Was there another crisis on the island that went neglected because all the EMTs responded to a minor injury--who knows? Was all the timing the necessary timing to save a life?
