Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot Zundert, in the Dutch province of North Brabant, March 30, 1853.

My old friend Zlatko, from whom I derive my strange handle, and who was a speaker of ten languages, said Americans, in order to pronounce Dutch properly, should imagine they have a throat disease.

Some Dutch friends of mine used to pronounce Vincent's last name as if they were an old timer on the front porch of the general store in St. Louis, Missouri in 1859, about to project tobacco juice into a brass spitoon.

By the way, this isn't the "film" thread, but allow me to recommend the excellent film on Van Gogh and his brother, "Vincent and Theo", by Robert Altman. Tim Roth gives a magnificent performance as Vincent in the movie.

yes! that film is a must

and as for the throat disease - yes, it's a rough sound at the back of the gum (almost in the throat)... like the scottish 'ch' in loch, or the hebrew 'ch' in baruch, or the german 'ch' in wach.
