Go ahead. Talk about it.

Jesus as a curse word?

Post by Doreen Peri » May 27th, 2007, 4:46 pm

OMG!

I was just playing scrabble and was talking in the lobby saying that my opponent refused to even say hello to me. I said, "It's very frustrating and annoying when I say hi, I say good luck, i compliment him or her on a couple of great plays and don't even get a reply."

I said, "It's like playing a bot. Then again.... Jesus, even the bots here say hi and good luck!"

A lady got very angry with me! She said I was cursing when I used the name Jesus like that. I've never heard of such a thing! I use the name/word Jesus as an emphatic phrase like "geez" or "jeez" or "damn" etc... all the time! Doesn't everybody?

She said there were kids on that site and you can't say curse words. I replied, "I wasn't saying a curse word. I said Jesus. Since when is Jesus a curse word?"

Imagine that. Now, just curious.... do any of you think saying Jesus as an emphatic word in a sentence is cursing? Jesus! Am I wrong?

What other words could be considered curse words which aren't curse words? List them for me.

I'm so confused...

:D

Fuck! It's really not a curse word at all. It originated as the saying "to fuck the fields" as in "to sow". So fuck isn't even all that bad if you assess it's original intent. Now the act itself? Well you 're going straight to hell for actually doing it for other than the need to perpetuate the species.

As for "Jesus". My understanding of why it's soooo bad is because you are taking the Lord's name in vain. To use a very holy holy name as a form of a curse word, to place impact on what you say, is considered in bad taste and worse...sin! Trivializing, for there is power in that name and not just to exclamate what you say.

I'm very bad for saying "Jesus Christ" very venomously whenever I stub a toe, or otherwise hurt myself, or just to, you know, point out my enthusiasm or great frustrations.

However, your use of the word there, in the context you describe is relatively tame. You are a piker compared to me. Rest easy. Rest easy and tell this joker who verbally accosted you not to sweat the little things. Jesus is more easily able to forgive you for your innocent useage than her for her uncalled for outburst.

But, while we're at it, OMG is probably considered bad as well. Acronyms for taking God's name in vain are just as foul you know. :P

If you ask me her anger and outrage are more of a bad example for kids than anything you said.

A few more examples of curse words might be...

twat and pussy
slut and whore

though I don't know why on earth they are
they can fit quite gently into a sentence
for example

oh tis a twat of a day
here pussy pussy pussy
she's a real whore with a hammer and chisel
that is a very slutty example of an euphemism you've used there

Words are only curse words if they're spat venomously. Just used in a common every day way seems perfectly alright to me. :)
I used to walk with my head in the clouds but I kept getting struck by lightning!
Now my head twitches and I drool alot. Anonymouse

Yeah, I'd always thought it was because it was considered blasphemy.

I once got yelled at for saying 'wanker'. Funny, actually, cause normally I swear like a sailor. My apologies to any and all sailors here.

"Jeez" seems fairly harmless and common. "Jesus" is definitely borderline-- could go either way... it was a definite taboo in our house, growing up. Now "Jesus H. Christ"... that's a decent swear word (erm, phrase?)...

{sorry}

Don't feel bad. One of my mother's aunts was very strictly religious (actually, they all were) and would always complain that my mother and I didn't spend enough time in church. I remember once, maybe two or three months before she passed, my mother and I had stopped by to visit her. I must've been 9 years old at the time. Anyway I was talking to my mother and somewhere in the conversation, I said "by the way". My great-aunt shot up from that bed and started screaming at me for taking the Lord's name in vain. I didn't know what the hell she was talking about and was scared b/c my mom wasn't beyond whooping me in front of anyone if I was being disrespectful to elders. Finally, after a lot of tearful questioning and sputtering, I was told that the Lord is the "way", therefore saying "by the way" was saying "by the Lord". Thus, blasphemus, and taking the Lord's name in vain, a sin very much frowned upon in the bible. I've had trouble saying "by the way" without looking over my shoulder ever since. Apparently no phrase is safe from the scrutiny of the Christian right. Go figure.

Jesus is just this guy.

A pretty common name in some parts of the world.

i don't get it, Dor'... jesus, radicals like her shouldn't even be playing games as they might be construed as gambling, wouldn't you think? scrabble is another game of winning over losing, like all gambling.
