Rediscovered "The Shins"... Boy Are They Rad!

Post by izeveryboyin » February 3rd, 2008, 10:01 pm

I got hooked on those hep cats through constant watching and subsequent re-watching of "Garden State" which is... without a doubt... in no less than... my top five... favorite movies.. ever... in life. Period. When Sam told Largeman that "New Slang" would "Change your life" she was totally right. I immediately went out and bought "Oh, Inverted World" For 11.99 at Borders and proceeded to play it out for the better part of four months. Especially since this was back when I was one of the cool kids who had an MP3 player (met its death by a mixture of three year old curiosity and bad judgement on the placement of a cup of chicken noodle soup). It continued to be in fairly frequent rotation on my radio and computer, but definitely the last year or so, I've been a little lacking. Then I happened over the Zune commerical with the song "Sleeping Lessons". It is perhaps too awesome for words. I have been playing it over and over for the last 45 minutes. Seriously. It's that rad. Finally I gave in and started to listen to the whole album, "Wincing the Night Away", which... I have to say... is pretty rad as well. If you're in for a good time... grab a can of cranberry splash soda, skim through a few truly hilarious blogs expertly written by your best internet pal, and play the shins... over and over. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: Mother. Fucking. Yeah.

End.

p.s My b-day's coming up Wednesday. Someone buy the CD for me as a present.

I have to admit that Garden State kind of disappointed me. I know tons of people love it (which might be part of the problem, over-hype?), but I found it boring and obvious. And I found Sam irritating, and if you can't stand the main girl, you're lost. I did like the couple living in the junk yard, and the very awesome use of Simon and Garfunkel.

Definite Shins love. Have you heard 'Gone for Good' from Chutes Too Narrow? Probably one of my favourite songs

I love the Shins. I got into them through Garden State, which is also, probably, in my top 5 films ever list as well :D

"What are you listenin' to?"
"the shins...you know 'em?...you've gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life, I swear..."

Chutes Too Narrow is a great record. Its constant home is inside me car, where I listen to music most, it seems.

I haven't bought Oh Inverted World yet, but New Slang is a gorgeous song.

The Shins play the music that has been in this hippy's head for years.

Wincing the Night Away is a great record as well but it was less obvious to me at first. I guess that's a good thing. Chutes is pure poppy gorgeousness and Wincing... well... it took a while for me to enjoy it properly.

But I love Chutes. I can play most of the songs on my guitar now. Great fun to play such sweet melodies. and, I mean sweet like candy, not sweet like "suh-weet". just to clarify.

I don't think I'll manage to buy you a CD for your birthday (I'm a tad skint just now and there's a few new glasgow bands I'd like to fund by buying their new records, namely Glasvegas, Frightened Rabbit and Twilight Sad (they each have their own myspace if you'd care to google and investigate. WARNING: they all sing in their own, glasgow accents. be warned!)...

so, I can't "buy" you anything, but I "made" you this:

Put 24 glorious candles on that B-Day cake, ladies and gents. And maybe one more, to celebrate my recent foray into motherhood... a forever job that I couldn't be happier with.

P.S I'd be just as happy with a thread completely dedicated to me on my birthday. You have one day to get it together. Good luck.
