I would think that would be more of a reflection on the poet more so than references to Greek mythology in general.

I don't find that limp. The difference would be if the poet has something to say, or is just showing off their supposed knowledge. Which, I suppose, would lead back to the original question.

Strangely I was thinking of something along the same lines recently. Not writing a new version or anything, just Freudian reversal, I guess.

Some people are assholes. It think the arts and humanities attract so many because they're more accessible than other fields. I once met this guy who was studying chemistry who just talked and talked about chemistry, apparently trying to impress everyone with his knowledge (though, of course, just irritating everyone instead).

At the same time, I wouldn't call an ego the same as snobbery or pretension. While an ego can be just as irritating, it can also be deserved (the same can not be said of snobbery or pretension). I'm thinking of someone like Picasso, whose ego is perhaps as famous as he is.

I was reading about the Renaissance one time and I was astounded to discover that the wide-spread use of Greek myth in art & literature began then. This was because the Greek myths were all known by heart by all educated people; to them, it wasn't some ancient thing, it was RIGHT NOW and just as applicable as ever.

Now there's a lot of people who use Greek myth as an axiomatic reaction, because it's something that they've seen done in great art. "Because you're s'posed to," even if they don't consciously realize it. If you use Greek myth (or any other reference) for a specific purpose, then good. But if you didn't specifically choose that reference to make a specific point, well, all that shows is a lack of critical perspective. What is an artist without critical perspective? A sack of meat with a paintbrush.

Which is what pretentiousness is all about: Napoleon complex. Cover up your smallness by looking large in other areas.

So, as to all those pretentious snobby snotty types, fuck 'em. Ignore 'em and enjoy the chablis :)
