Hester gets an interview.....

Post by hester_prynne » June 1st, 2008, 5:15 pm

Indeed.
Funny, I have applied for so many jobs to no avail.
Then, out of the blue, an email comes from a friend who years ago I got a job for.
A company needs an editor, to do the same sort of thing I did for 15+ years, legal editing, a job I truly loved though not many could understand my love of it...it was dry, boring, totally uncreative jargon, my job was to proof and edit it, morelike stay awake while doing so. Heh. But I did stay awake as the challenge of it never bored me and I could listen to music on headphones the whole time. I liked being out there in this remote field of words on printed page, perfecting them, despite the fact that no one really cared about it much, cept lawyers looking up info.
Anyway, I had the phone interview and now must go in for the in-person, to fill out the app and take the dreaded editing tests.
I hate these types of tests, they never represent me well.
Any ideas from any folks about preparing for these tests would be appreciated. I've taken a bunch of online spellers and done well.
Been reviewing westlaw and the bluebook.
Job has all the benefits, perks, and a grand salary.
It is in Seattle, downtown, on the 40th floor.
Wish me luck.

Interesting, hest

I've applied for hundreds of jobs lately too.
We can't be deterred by rejection slips, they go with the territory.

But I have had some success. I don't really want to work for somebody else. Just one of my quirks. I have several freelance jobs pending. Strangely they are not the ones I applied for. They just came out of the blue. The most tried and true method of job search: know somebody...haha

good luck with the interview

Theda! That sounds about perfect. A little high up, yes, but the vision and work seem agreeable, embrace-able, and headphones always transport...
I wish you the best of all possible luck.

Okay, so tommorrow at 10:30 am PST say a little prayer for hest, that she passes those tests and that she looks presentable enough to have a good shot at a job on the 40th floor as an editor for a big law firm in downtown Seattle.
( I do not know how to dress beyond hobo or nightclub singer very well. I got a nice jacket and black shell to go underneath it and black slacks. I have some nice shoes I shined up that are kindof vintage but I think ok. I got my hair trimmed and i'm going to put white out on one of my teeth in the front that has had a root canal and is discolored a bit. Thats the best I can do.....)
Sigh.

how about dangley earrings to distract the eye (business-like dangle)
and a bangle, to subtlely keep the rhythm shiny.

Interview went well, now it's up to the fates...I found the tests to be rather easy, but then again, I'm not so sure I speak in conventional tongue enough.....so onward and upward...
.looks like I might be gettin an interview with the state folks too...finally.
It was really an adventure yesterday, smack dab downtown Seattle, pouring rain, winter weather...but when I got up to that 40th floor and looked around it seemed familiar and inviting, boxes of paper all around, documents needing to be read...and perfected.....I was ready to dig in right there.....
I didn't do the white out on my tooth, too toxic and besides my tooth doesn't really look that bad...I noticed a few employees there with teeth worse than mine.
And you know, I realize today in reflection that I went in there this time, without as much self-deprecation, in fact I presented myself as a jewel for them instead of someone needing a job badly...and I think this improved my chances. Why did I do this? Because my self-esteem has improved I think!!!!!Because a good friend of mine helped me out right before the interview and it made me feel good about myself! Plus the support here helps me too, more than any of you could imagine.
The beat goes on.....

hest,

I'm glad you had a good interview. I had a good interview too, day before yesterday.

The boss man and I sat down and drank Coronas for three hours, told tall tales and brainstormed ideas.

My only preparation for the interview was my resolve to be myself. And strangely it turned into an interview for him. He was the guy doing the hiring. Go figure.

Apparently I charmed him because after we negotiated terms, he shook my hand and dropped cash on the table, just to show that he was serious.

Confidence can be everything.
