Potty Graffiti

Post by Lightning Rod » June 7th, 2008, 12:23 am

Once when I was a kid, I happened across an overturned outhouse in Lampassas, Tx. On the inside wall this was inscribed in crayola or #2 carpenter's pencil or charcoal or something: 'I have shat in England, I have shat in France, but before I shit in this place, I will shit in my pants."

That was my first experience with bathroom graffiti.

What was yours?

(then, I always liked the one that I saw inscribed above eye-level above a urinal:

"Why are you looking up here? Ashamed to look at what's down there?"

What's your most memorable potty graffiti? (No phone numbers, please)
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

when i was a youngster, maybe 12 years old, my mother took summer classes at the community college. sometimes she would take me along. i have no idea why i remember this....i was seated on the potty and noticed the graffiti written on the first sheet of toilet paper in blue ink. it read "ocean county college diplomas".

another favorite was in a bar in astoria, oregon. it read "only ignorant people resort to using profanity in a fucking argument"

in my last job i had to travel down south to england. me and the guy i travelled with went out for a few drinks one night after getting to our hotel rooms. the bar toilets had signs above the urinals saying "please do not throw cigarette butts in the urinals" someone had scribbled underneath one of them "yeah, it makes them soggy and difficult to light"

i was in a bar on the border of florida and alabama a few years ago. the florabama (apparently it's famous?) a piece of graffiti in the toilets read "if pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress?"

on occasion I have gone to burger king. i'm not proud of it but... sometimes a man just needs a burger. i saw a sign in the toilet above the sink that read, "employees must wash hands" underneath the sign someone had added a little bit of their own. "i waited and waited but in the end i just washed my hands myself."

a poem is a poem is a poem. words remembered. even on potty stalls. very serious thoughts on why our species remembers toilet odes.

I've had quite a few run-ins with toilet graffiti, and I'm so intrigued by it that I typically remember them all...
Some of the best were "Kayla is the hottest slut I know" being memorable only because that is my name, and I wondered if there was some secret hater out there spreading poison, then I remember how common the name is starting to become and let it go.
Another was "Got shit?" Just above a toilet
And my personal favorite, "Men are like parking spots, the good ones are taken and the free ones are handicapped."
sometimes I just like to breathe.

great topic, but memory fails...
All I can think of is, "We aim to please. Your aim will help keep it that way", above a urinal in Bly, Oregon.

Allen Ginsberg wrote poem about graffiti. I can't remember the title of it. Here in Madison I'll write out for things on walls. I end them with a squiggle line as my trademark signature.

I still remember this one from when I was a teenager. Taking a piss in an old bathroom in downtown ELP, I read above the toilet -

"This is where Napoleon beat his Bonaparte"

From the wall of a bathroom to the memory of a lifetime...
