Ambition

Post by saw » June 7th, 2008, 6:16 am

It's not all bad being mad.
People cut you a generous berth,
let you move to the head of the line,
even open doors for you.
Hell, even that witch at the DMV
was nice to me the other day
not knowing if I was armed.
Folks seem to know the difference
between cantankerous
and Nuts.
Maybe it's my quirky body English,
the unbalanced waver in the tone
of my voice, my hostile demands,
my uncombed, uncut hair,
only half of my shirt tucked in.
Maybe it's my high-water red corduroys,
my ankle bearing white socks,
the extra set of eyebrows I draw
on my forehead, or my Sharpie
blackened teeth.
Who cares if the attention
is positive or negative, the point
is the squeaky hinge gets greased
and I don't have the energy to explain
nor justify what it is I want.
No, I just scare the shit out of people
'til they give it to me, even muggers
eschew lunatics, and I consider myself
a professional, like an athlete
I've paid my dues, those endless hours
practicing my wide-eyed stare
in the mirror are paying dividends.
Being crazy takes discipline,
and hard work.
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Ahhh, my friend I have lived your poem. How bizarre I must seem to some. Yet they seem equally so to me. When I read this poem of yours, I said Ah ha! You spoke for those like me who walk the world as foreigners.
