Down Damascus way

Post by mnaz » June 20th, 2008, 3:20 am

On the way to the megachurch
I met a cloud of electromagnetism.
It sounded like a righteous forcefield.
Divine destiny crackled by the road.

Now is the time to make a stand,
to write love letters to holy violence.
No time to hesitate, decimate the marauders.
The megachurch has a fifty foot screen.

I saw dandelions and dalliance too.
The megachurch has a television studio.
Paul, Paul, why persecuteth me?
You wrote the love chapter.

For heaven's sake
they create
hell on earth.

Monkey brains
Love to connect the dots
That is why
I love my bible
It is all in there
It explains everything
The holocaust was
God’s plan to redeem the Jews
Just keep on calling for a holy war
And their mighty smitey god will be on our side
And there is nothing we can not achieve With god on our side.

yes, i'm inclined to agree. you have a crisp style that is recognizably you. i went to megachurch - they had tvs in the floor! on this big screen behind the alter(?), they were running ads for different church programs, and the one for the church basketball team had this rappy looking black guy looking hip. very calculating in a cheesy whitebread sort of way.

Well, it was awfully late, and for some reason the phrase "On the way to the megachurch" stuck in my cranium, and how those huge corporate fundy Christian worship compounds creep me out-- themselves signs of the end times. And then that made me think of Saul on the way to Damascus, and... well... this one has some potential maybe. I might have to come back to it sometime.

Dino-- you mean they really do have giant screens behind the altar? I was just trying to embellish the image... Wow.

Anyway, thanks all. That Rod Parsley link ("McCain's spiritual advisor") that Jack posted got me going a bit...

...I kill myself with this stuff too.

Yeah, Saul's conversion on that road always struck me. Opened up a can of worms, religiously. The savage zealot is humbled and transformed by the "Voice of Christ" to lead that same faith he'd persecuted, a humble new church that grew so top-heavy over the centuries that it too persecutes and incites... But then, maybe I'm too much of a "glass-half-empty" type lately, and I let these holy-war-spouting mega-preachers get to me...

On the road to the megachurch,
he met an electromagnetic cloud.
Divine destiny glowed by the road,
crackled like a holy forcefield.

Light glared down from the towers.
The megachurch has a television studio.
They speak in ominous twilight tongues,
build great towers to twinkling Christ.

It was time to make a stand,
to write love letters to holy violence.
No hesitation, the call to decimation.
The megachurch has a fifty foot screen.

On the road, love's light came down,
and humbled persecutor turned pastor.
Paul, Paul, why now persecutest us?
You once wrote the love chapter.

I had to google "Way to Damascus" and I realized that I didn´t remember the "Hechos de los Apóstoles" well , and that there is a Reentry Center with its name in Golden Valley, and I finally crashed into Caravaggio´s "Conversione di San Paolo"... wow!, thanks!

mnaz... I already have written the following 2 paragraphs below and thought I'd better let you know they were inspired by your excellent poem. So don't blame me for this wordiness, eh?

Its attributed to Jesus "Upon this rock I build My church..." which is rather baffling to me. Jesus was Jewish and as far as I know the word 'church' wasn't used amongst Jews. Why would Jesus use that word..? Yeah, Jesus didn't speak English... as a matter of fact, there was no English, so he probably said this in Hebrew. Which makes the word "church' even more puzzling. Damn, James! Whassup with that ?!?!

And now the cult of Christianity is hauling in mega-bucks into the coffers of mega-churches to further the mega-wealth of these infamous mega-preachers that obviously are clueless to any serious questions regarding the very religion they rapidly attempt to instill into the hearts and minds of their flock from where comes their mega-power. Mega-hypocrisy..? Mega-hypocrisy...

Sorry cecil, just saw yr reply.

Jesus may have been Jewish, but his message transcended any such distinction. That's the great thing about Jesus, eh? And this transcendence, this universal "eligibility" to deal directly with God was theologically codified by the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, where he was headed to continue his grim persecution until a beam of love's light (Christ) literally struck him down. From that moment on, or so I've been taught, we were all equal children of God, Jew and gentile alike. And of course this has nothing to do with the ensuing centuries of periodic corporate bastardization by the Church of this realization.
