The Planet Adjusts

Post by Lightning Rod » July 31st, 2008, 2:02 pm

The Planet Adjusts

when we have gas, it's called a burp
when the earth has gas, it's called an earthquake

our species will be ruined by it's success
the planet will survive, who knows about us?

we've fucked ourselves out of a place at the table
because of our thumbs and our language
and our control of fire, we think we rule the world
we think we can even destroy it with our farts

but this planet has had many fits and starts
ages and eons and epochs have come and gone
species are born and expire in a single day
it's no big deal to the planet

insects are the ascendant species
One day termites will control the world
they are more organized than roaches
and the entire colony has only one girl

or maybe the gastropods will prevail
and the world will be ruled by snails
the armadillo could make a comeback
and grow to an extraordinary size
breed with ostriches and asparagus
perhaps bacteria will become wise

someone will make fossil fuels from our bodies
our billions and billions of bodies
they will survive and the earth will survive
until it is split by an asteroid or the sun goes dark

then it will become part of something larger
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

It is easier for me to imagine The World Without Us then to imagine the world without me.

I like the idea of a hyper intelligent armadillo driving around with a tank full of human gasoline.

excellent work Clay
thanks for writing

Jack, you are an amazement
what a perfect illumination of this poem
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

I love this one. We'll probably find a way off this old bucket of a solar system before it flames out-- whomever "we" are... (and on to the spiritual sustenance and trashing of others).

Wait! You mean hyper intelligent armadilloes will still be hooked on fossil fuels?...
