Bridge

Post by Lightning Rod » August 5th, 2008, 12:01 am

I could never understand bridge
my mother tried to teach it to me
she was a life master and played
with Omar Shariff but I couldn't learn it

I did fine at poker and gin and even canasta
but bridge was just a mystery to me
all I know about bidding and tricks
is what I learned on the street

And the trumps and long-suits
sound like fashion to me
I guess I'm just a dummy
I thought bridges went from here to there
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

You play chess Clay?

Bridge is such a social game
Much more so than chess
Which is a game for loners
My oldest brother
Switched from chess to bridge
Because he liked the social interaction more

This is a guy who has 1600 Chess Federation of the untied states points, a chess master level I think. But he loves bridge now, he tries to explain me the intricacies of the bidding but my eyes glaze over.

I was living on the beach in Morro Bay California
I loved that town
In the town square they had a chessboard laid out with paving stones, it must have be 30' by 30'
The pieces about three feet high
You had to lug them around

It was a bitch
So hard to see the whole board in your head.

My dad taught me to play when I was just a little jackster
He played me with his back to the board, he could visualize the location of every piece, and he would call out his moves.
Knight to King's Bishop four

When I was in Morro bay I started to going to the chess club at night
Someone there invited me to the next field trip to play at the prison in SLO town.
Big ass prison
I played a guy named,,, a convict,,, who called himself "cowboy” I captured his queen pretty early in the game
But I still lost to him.
I was happy it made his day,
"I beat him with out my queen" he crowed

Want to play sometime by email?
I always loved that scene in The Big Sleep, where Marlow is standing over his chessboard contemplating his next move, and then he got the uncanny feeling and sensed the presence of someone in the room with.

Nice poem
I guess
But what the hell do I know about poetry

Except I am always grateful when it gives me something to write about.

"and the trumps and long-suits

thank you constanitne
I hardly noticed anything about the poem
I just inhaled it.
I should not post on this board
poetry is too intimate for me.
