One of the finest young gymnasts is named Nastia Luken
she lives about 10 miles from where I do, local girl
I sure would have hated to grow up in Texas public school
with a name like Nastia Luken
(how long do you think it would have taken the boys to come up with the obvious variation: Nasty Lookin?)

Olympic Soap Opera--Fairy Tale
The first thing that I thought when I thought when I saw the Chinese girls gymnastics team was, 'is this Romper Room?, kindergarten?'
They all looked like fairies.
Ok, I'm not too culturally literate in Chinese. Maybe they have a way to keep the girls small. You know, foot wrapping or something.
But these girls looked younger than 16 to me.
Now it looks as if there is a scandal brewing about this. The American team got the silver and would have a gold if the Chinese team was disqualified for trafficing in underaged girls. Olympic white (oops, yellow) slavery.
The Chinese say they have documents to prove that the girls were old enough. Of course the only problem with this method of verification is that the Chinese government made the documents. I could print a document that said I graduated Cum Laude from Harvard as a Doctor of Everything if I wanted, and hang it on my wall.
Personally I don't care how old the girls are. They performed beautifully. They deserved the gold. But when you enter a contest that has rules, it is always disappointing when someone, especially the winner, doesn't follow them.

Better Than the Olympics
I was flipping through the channels
Texas has its own version of Olympic games
it's called the High Speed Chase
CNN had live coverage from Houston
it lasted forty minutes
the helicopter camera on every turn
It was like a Bruce Willis movie
the guy was good
gallant in his desperate way
he had a hundred cop cars
and several helicopters on his tail
he wasn't going to get away
surely he must have known that
but he kept running
dodging
making agile moves
maybe he was looking for his
forty minutes of fame
but watching it was
better than the Olympics
what a volley!
Gold Medal in the High Speed Chase!

It's almost time for my favorite Olympic event:
the women's individual gymnastics competition
The Americans look like they have it this year
number one and two are Nasy Lookin and Shawn Johnson
they are like Astaire and Kelly
Nasty is elegant and graceful
Johnson is physical and powerful
This ought to be good

It was a joy to watch the girl's gymnasts win gold and silver
I thought that the judges were going to rob them but
no reasonable person could deny their excellence
Nasty Lookin was pure perfection with a steel gaze
and Shawn was a joy in pure pixie dust
Phelps continues his amazing performance
most decorated Olympian in history
If they put all his gold medals on him and threw him in the pool
he would drown
