Language Stars!

I am in another one of those dreaded parental battles that happen when one parent thinks it should be one way, and the other parent completely disagrees. I recently rang up Myla's pops and told him from now on to make out his CS checks to Language Stars! which is this great program where they teach kids from the toddler age on up to about 8 years old how to speak another language in a fun environment. I've already paid all the enrollment fees, and I have already cleared my schedule for that time so that I can take her every week. She'll be learning French. Her father insists he does not want her going to learn a language he does not know how to speak yet. He feels she should wait until he can learn how to speak it before I send her, and God knows when that'll be. I told him my knowledge of the french language was not quite intermediate level, but I still thought it was a good idea given that all the experts say that people are better at learning new languages when they're children. Now I know it might be awkward to have your child speak a language that you don't, but is that really any reason to deprive that child of an opportunity to be better than you are. Isn't that, in essence, the whole point of becoming a parent? To raise them as good people who can become better that you? To make you proud? I've told him that I'm putting her in anyway, because I refuse to let her miss out on opportunities that can be beneficial to her future. He feels I am out of line. If I'm wrong in this, please tell me and I will reconsider the whole thing. Give me some reasoning behind it though. I just feel like he hasn't really given me anything solid enough to change my mind.

Why don't you just take the child support check made payable to you and do what you want to with it for Myla? Why involve him by having him make the check payable to the program? You're the custodial parent. He sends child support, as it should be, and you use it to care for your child. I do understand that it would be nice to agree but even if he doesn't agree, it shouldn't stop you from giving her French lessons.

and with all respect to baby-daddy, I think that the notion that your child shouldn't be learning more than you know is wicked retarded.
But let me register this doubt: you might be picking the wrong language. French is nice but Spanish or Chinese would probably be more useful to Jr. in her future.

Well D, that was what I was going to do with the check, but I was just wondering whether or not I was being unreasonable. Thanks for the vote of confidence, and I think I've made my deciscion now.

LRod, she's learning French because once I finish school I plan on trying to get up with French Vogue in Paris, and it seems unfair to take her to live in a country where she does know the native tongue. But most hopefully she will be multi-lingual. I recognize the opportunities that would bring for her, but I think one language at a time is best, and I picked French first since I plan on her using that language soon. Thanks for the cyber-grandaddying.

That's what I was replying to, Kayla. I thought that he didn't want to make his check payable to them so I suggested he make it payable to you and you can pay them. I misunderstood that you were already thinking of doing that and just wanted support. Sorry. I support anything you want to do with your child support check which can support your daughter's best interests. I think it's wonderful that you want to put her in this language program! The best time to learn a language is when you're young! Good for you! I applaud you!

Thanks everyone for the vote of confidence! Feel better about ti already. Arcadia... believe it or not, I'm the only one I know with a child in this kind of program to. But I expect that will change going to these classes.
