a late night in a dark tunnel
a robot lady voice tells us
when things happen.
-are we there yet?
-no, we havent left
time is, of course,
confused
by the slowness
of left-handed script.
green dresses.
yellow shorts.
blue t-shirts.
red sweaters.
green numbers
called time.
eyeglasses.
shoulderbags.
ankle bracelets.
platform hurls immediacy.
2.
outta window i havent seen
in a while.
up the incline.
washington's verdigris
dully stands.
out skyward it's sunset west.
colors knife the clouds & air
rolling thru flashing angles of a passing train.
a whole space within
sky shimmers thru the shadows.
outward
out there
in the sky
there's an idea
out a window.
3.
a dicey dogged proposition
southard thru tunnels.
adrift in a becalmed subway
riding under & among
tidings from a blue sky above.
sun shines down.
miracles are in the interpretation
like a tree grows in disturbed
post-civilized earth.
or, i kept a garden in my dream
it ws beside a little stream
so i never had to carry water far.
i dont know what kind
of danger
there might've been
from such pestly beasts
as rabbits & other
vicious garden pillagers.
there ws a garden there
by the little stream
in my dream.

rattle & trainsway
comforting sounds
familiar patterns
& variations
on a noisy theme.
shadows pass
a similar time
& the passing train
the other way
plays counterpoint.
flashing splashing afternoon light
feathering, fractallic angles of transit.
down the incline
into tunnels under day
rattle & trainsway play
a familiar tattooo
jangle thoughts
rhythm & motion
in variable patterns
of dark & light.
5.
rattle among
one bus brushes coolly past
oh there's the next
one train breaks by
there's the next
& this time it's even the right train
& passes the other direction on the bridge.
what's brooklyn's sunlit:
bridge, water, sky.
trees & cranes & buildings.
the descent:
it's not running fast.
there's a train ahead
& a train behind.
no rush
but consistency of a morning.
train brakes squeal us
slow underground.
train fragments
train fragments
