well, i'm not swayed.
nobody came up with a better idea, or offered any suggestions that i found useful, with the exception of 'let the families of the victims decide' which i think is certainly apropriate. i think that keeping them locked up for the rest of their lives is the way it already works, not something that needs creating. but personally, i have no use for keeping them alive.
see this guy here... http://home.cogeco.ca/~mrcarle/OLSON.HTM ... i remember him. i spent all of my childhood and highschool years hearing this guy's name. i think every kid he raped and murdered was in my city. and there was a lot of them. nobody knows how many. i think he was convicted on 10 victims but it is thought he could be responsible for over 60 victims whose murders remain unsolved.
if you want to buy him breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day for the rest of his life, and see that he's tucked in safe at night, i guess that's your perrogative. maybe the cost of keeping these guys alive should be split up only among those who are anti-capital punishment. and all of you lovely, empathetic people could adopt your own serial killers, choose your favourite, even!
but if i'm FOR capital punishment, why should I have to buy him dinner? my empathy has it's limits.

i know, i was too tactless with that one. i just think that murder oversteps the line of any need for tact.
here's another... robert pickton... also in my hometown, he is thought to be responsible for the murders of over 60 women. he ran a pig farm, and that's how he disposed of his victims, by feeding them to his pigs.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_kill ... tml?sect=2 if you just keep hitting "next chapter" you'll keep getting more and more pages of the story.
i worked across the street from the pig farm and every day i'd see the police out there turning over huge heaps of earth, with little red flags in the ground all over the place - the places where they'd found more evidence... he's also got a trailer full of all the girl's ID's and purses.
i don't feel the need to be polite to him, or empathetic. i think the families of his victims should legally have any revenge on him they want.
doreen, i think it makes you a beautiful person to be so empathetic. i mean, that's really an incredible characteristic, no doubt about it. but i can't live up to it.

Actually, I meant it. I was the tactless one. I have no use for killers either.
It goes a lot deeper and good grief, we're all crimminals. I still say, give the common man the ability to mete out justice on the spot. Mistakes will be made but we do indeed kill thousands on the road each year . . . go figure. Do I smell a Catch 22? This started out as a DP thing and it just never will work it's way out. Killing is inherent in our species. A killing is a killing but even nature provides culling animals. Since we're the top of the food chain (not really, think bacteria) we have to cull our own herd. I don't see a thing wrong with that. Please note I hate the legal system so I'm out on a broken limb here waving a leaf.
And hey -- Canadians are supposed to be such nice people. Ya gots all dez bad guys. You're helping me be proud that I'm an American again.
