Important: Free Rice Donations

Post by judih » October 26th, 2007, 8:00 am

If you follow this link

http://www.freerice.com/

you will find an online word game that donates rice to the United Nations World Food Program. The deal is you're asked to define a word from a list of four possible choices. If you get it right, 10 grains of rice are donated to charity. It's as simple as that.

It beats playing solitaire during those dull moments anyway... And it offers us one small thing to contribute.

doreen! excellent!
what a glorious way to use your scrabble prowess. i knew you were just the one to stock up the barrels.
i don't seem to have enough focus - i made it to 610 grains and then have to leave the puter.
but six hundred here, a thousand there and a few more bowls are filled.

It's sorta different than scrabble, judih, because scrabble players don't care what the words mean. They're like game pieces. All they care about is if they're valid - meaning included in the current version of the scrabble dictionary. heh... Odd, huh? The tourney players memorize word lists. It's an odd addiction.... sure to ruin anybody's vocabulary. :)

I'm sorta curious how this really gets rice to the United Nations World Food program. Hmmm.... I didn't read all the links. I'll go back and look in a bit. Maybe the sponsors are donating the $ for the rice? just a guess... I noticed small rotating logos at the bottom. Very discreet advertising. I like that. Trying to find discreet ads for the new site. (and yeah, there really IS a new site coming... i know it seems like a pipe dream since it's been so long.. lol :))

Hit judih's link everybody! The more rice the better!

the links tell a story, dor. i looked at the daily totals. This site began on October 7 and as the word is passed, more and more rice is being donated to the U.N. Food Program.

Meanwhile, many thanks to you, hest, and mt! What a fabulous way to work up a new vocabulary. how many times in the past year have i had occasion to use the words they're using. It all throws me back to my jr. highschool days when a new word a day made daily life snobbily exciting.

Dor, the new site! This is going to be an exciting year. sites, books, rice!
on with life!

and the good thing is that some words start to repeat, so eventually i'll remember all the earthworm references and the esoteric adjectives.

why they being so freakin' stingey? Why not just give the friggin' rice away without making people waste their time that they could be using to protest the war in Iraq?

or sending emails and chatting online forums, with.

yeah, real sadists. But, well, in this co-dependent world, i'd rather use words to send rice than bullets to steal it.

If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?

FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

FAQ
I been playing every day.

all you have to do i trade your brain/soul to the advertisers. play with capitalism, thats how they want it, no guns to steal rice as judih say, just free capitalist brainwashing.

fuck the man. no charity, steal tha Rice!
