Mojave Shrinking (cliched love song metaphor)

Post by Nazz » October 11th, 2008, 4:52 pm

Odd, the switch from one side to another, atop the latest desolation, the last dry-boned spine I stumbled up in a dark of white fusion and arid-pure heat of intensity. I may have drifted too far west. These mountains are nearly gone; a light storm is pushing them down, washing over them. Step to the right and I see a vague round-scape, the far side, much like here appears vaguely from there I imagine. I see a myth of escape and the desert curving softly down. Step to the left and I see speckles on the valley floor. Someone is keeping the lights on. There's a Taco Bell parking lot in that sprinkley, spacey heat. I must be home, in my quiet morass of unknown intensity, in my speckles advancing on a dying mountain, in my paved and desolate progress. I must be home.

Lost in the desert of life. The reality can play tricks on you.

I never been in the Mojave, but I wrote about it long time ago! :)

interesting piece, amigo, on many levels... and i'm still climbing up and sliding down the variations... the isolation of the desert vs taco bell... like some modern day oasis, at once so true but yet very disturbing.

I guess it was when I started seeing the end-of-the-earth ridges from more than one angle, even from the far side, that the myth of limitless expanse hit me. The Mojave round-scapes seemed so boundless, but soon you learn how the mosaic all fits together (and a lot of it is impounded military land) and the raw wonder of it can't help but diminish somewhat. The Mojave isn't as big as I thought. Or IS it?... ha.

Arcadia! You wrote about the Mojave?! Cool! Maybe you could post it?

Cecil-- thanks. It's kind of funny how when I spent so much time in the big, silent empty, the idea of City would gradually become more villified in my head, to the point where distant lights on a valley floor seemed quite a loud intrusion...

Thanks Dave. Indeed, reality can play tricks.

sure, here it is!. The literary side: while writing it I was reading a Robert Calbot book in english I had found somewhere but I wrote in spanish, it was a kind of play, enjoy!

May the setting
be the rising

Robert Calbot

Yo, Robert
Yo, azul Mediterráneo a mis espaldas
Yo, resistiéndome a esta magia
de vaivenes espumosos
y rumores interminables.

-Bien sé que sólo dos palabras
son capaces de la Gran Alquimia
y una de ellas es desierto -

Yo, otra vez
al pie del Joshua
respiro
arenas rojas, cielo, tierra
línea del horizonte
reptar
carretera
brilla, brilla
Flor. Mohave
