'Hoist That Rag' is his best song since The Black Rider album. The missus mentioned to me as we listened to the new one on christmas morning that Tom's the only artist that's still experimenting. I disagreed, but was hard pressed to come up with many examples to the contrary. Patton was the first to come to mind. not many others though. Claypool...

My favourite on that album is "Shake It," but "Hoist That Rag" is definitely awexome. Marc Ribot's guitar on that one is just excellent

Contemporary artists that experiment...
Well, I can think of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Modest Mouse at the moment, but there's gotta be more.

(well, there's always the Dream & Shadow Huntsman Group...)

i mean REALLY experiment. The yeahyeahyeahs, though i love them, are just rehashing pop rock. Early Elvis Costello wretling with early P.J. Harvey with an occasional disco beat. Like I said, I love it, but it's not terribly experimental. Mike Patton was doing it well for a while. Again, Les Claypool has always got something odd going on, though he also sticks to variations on the standards. Matmos are another that come to mind. Godspeed! You Black Emperor is another. Do Make Say Think also.
I have to give these modest mice a listen.

experimental ain't always the ultimate goal, mark...according to me, anyway...sometimes i just want to take others' songs and make them my own...kind of presumptuous, i suppose

for festivus i got chocolates, socks, sweaters, jeans, a shitty crichton book (State of Fear - it sucks), cedar planks for grilling salmon, and chicken haddies

If you are looking for experimentation, you should look into The Flaming Lips.
