R.I.P Raúl Alfonsín

Post by Arcadia » March 31st, 2009, 9:29 pm

I remember well his government, the civic enthusiasm in the transition period, the overhelming weight of the past, the crazy inflation, the militar "revueltas", the unconfortable failure sensation in the atmosphere at the anticipated end of his government... Good times here to exercise medium-term memory, I guess ...

I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.

ok, I guess I searched enough already! (at least for the moment!)

well, Gordon Brown makes me think in a Chesterton´s novels, Sarkozy in Versailles corridors, Obama in a too sincere CEO of his country and my president in a black widow

and it was kind of funny to see Obama explaining the american dream to a chinese journalist!

no idea, really... maybe too concret and too abstract at the same time to me.

meanwhile we were having lunch at my home with my brother & family and my dad today while we watched tv...the neverending Alfonsín funerals (I thought in his family... it must have been exhausting!). I told that I remembered Perón funerals on tv, they didn´t believe me, but I remember them!!!!!!!!
and well, lot of people in the media talking about democracy, historical justice, memory and hope for dialogue right now here. ...let´s see how long it lasts...! (and I don´t want to be cynic about it but...). And all that mixed with old Malvinas news... it seems that the democratic government just decided to open a phone-assistant-line for ex-combatientes in emergency...
and yeah what I feel real and somehow odd (and a bit necrological, but we are kind of too much necrologic country sometimes) is that Alfonsin death made most of us with enough age connect again to times where both the collective pain and hope where high. Considering the actual times of collective big confrontation, paranoia, and somehow delusion maybe is interesting... who knows!

and my favourite song from the democracy beggining was ringing in my ears today :)

A symbol of the democracy
Alfonsín was born March 12, 1927. Its political life began when was 27 years old and was elected councilman of Chascomús. Also he was national and provincial representative and he occupied different charges in the UCR. Finally, in 1983 he arrived at the Presidency of an Argentina that left behind the darkest period of his history.

If something characterized to Raúl Alfonsín along all its political life was the firm conviction that the radicalism, to which entered at the age of 20 when studied law, should wager always to the power beyond the partisan internal conflicts and the discussions of committee.

In fact, this vision that the UCR was an essential element for the support of the democracy, carried it to exclaim in December of 2001, in full fiasco of the government of the Alliance, "that themselves break not the party", they as relate radical leaders.

With this premise, occupied its first public office at the age of 27, upon being chosen councilman in its hometown, Chascomús.

It was provincial representative and national representative, occupied different charges of the partisan leadership and arrived at the Presidency of the Nation of the hand of the democratic recovery, in 1983.

Had been splits active of the Multipartidaria that fought for the end of the bloody last dictatorship, after long years of exercise of the terrorism of State.

To the presidency of the Nation arrived after a hard internal one that won to the delarruismo in 1982, being supported in the radical line "Renewal and Change" that was opposed head-on to the balbinismo.

Alfonsín already had been faced to Ricardo Balbín in 1972 in an internal one that lost.

The electoral campaign that finally gave the triumph defeating to the justicialista Italian Luder, based it on three puntales that just then considered strategic: the accusation of a presumed pact "military-union"; the mention to the Introduction of the National Constitution that recited upon finalizing each speech of campaign, and the already legendary one "with the democracy is eaten, is educated and cures itself".

Alfonsín won to Luder with the 51.75 percent of the votes against the 40.16.

Without doubt, the judgment to the Meeting of Commanders, that received life in prison, marked its commitment with the defense of the human rights that already had shown upon becoming one of the founders of the Permanent Assembly of the Human Rights and already as the president the impulse that gave to the creation of the Conadep.

The judgment began in April of 1985 and finalized in December of that year, when before the verdict the fiscal one July Strassera pronounced the famous one "Never More".

These facts will not be able to be erased despite the Laws of Final Point, dictation in December of 1986, and Obedience should approved as a result of the lifting "right-wing" in Holy Week of 1987, both abrogated during the management of Néstor Kirchner..

They were exactly the military liftings, added to failed economic plans, to the recurrent general strikes and, finally, a galloping hyperinflation, the ones that perforated the power of Alfonsín and they forced it to abandon their charge five months before the end of their mandate.

July 2 passed, the former president was declared "Civic Illustrious" by the Legislature of Buenos Aires, that underlined "his he contribute permanent in favor of the democracy, his unavoidable defense to the fight by the human rights and his commitment inclaudicable after a better country".

Perhaps nobody better than him could summarize how would he recall him the history: "That leave it that answer him the history, but never there will be nothing of what to accuse me. I am with the clear conscience", responded Alfonsín a journalist five years ago.

Since the recovery of the democracy, the roads that was traveling the radicalism were in good measure guided by their steps.

In fact, in 1993 sealed the call "pact of Olives" with the then mandatory one Carlos Menem, what opened the doors to the Constitutional Reform of 1994, that at the same time supplied the presidential reelection. "I did him to save the democracy", repeated time and again the radical leader.

Then, it was one of the driving forces of it called Alliance (the understanding between the UCR and the Frepaso), that in 1999 he would put an end to the management menemista and he would carry to the Pink House to Fernando of the Street, to whom accompanied since the presidency of the party.

After the failure and the fall of this government, Alfonsín, even without being the president of the radicalism, he tried to guide the partisan crisis.

This time, the health to Alfonsín he played him a passed evil. Nevertheless, his physical fortress already had remained shown nine years ago, when miraculously managed to survive of a serious automobile accident that boarding school maintained him and with his life in check during almost forty days.

well yes, but at least i sould be able to understand if the eulogy is sincere or not, how the man's life is seen in the context of Argentine history, the history and affairs of another country. You live there, a brave soul, probably more secure than we are here in America. Tuesday I will do this!
