Not hyponogogic because it did not occur as he was falling asleep but when he was waking up, up waking from sleep

I had the same experience once.

I could not remember who I was when I woke up
a moment of dread as my mind started to race trying to remember my name
than a pleasant feeling
I knew it would all come rushing back if I waited a moment or two and it did.
