Isaac Tennant, black-haired, one-eyed,
Said through his thin tight lips,
“Don’t trust those psychiatrist fellas

With your mind, or they’ll pickle it
Like an onion and put it in a jar
Like some still-born babe.”

The girl next to him at the bar,
Brunette, squint-eyed said,
They’re the priests of the modern soul.”

But he let her words pass him
Like a foul smell, wrinkling his nose.
Staring at their reflections in the mirror,

Saw her hand raise her skirt
And scratch her thigh,
Looked at his one eye, and smiled.
