in the rain, i was a fan of john irving, before portland,in kauai, reading, was a joy-since the degree and a few books later, my reading is less and less, but i am a groupie of the great words.the first "wordstock" had all the hippies i hung out with and all my favorite writers, and a whole bunch of funny artistic new writers...i got to hear john irving read from "until i find you"
i saw paul krasner, and the hog farm daze crew, but my bell really rang, as norman mailer was speaking, and i won his autograph- and he signed my book "The spooky art of writing" he did not look at anyone until i got to the table, and he took my hand and looked deeply in my eyes.
i cannot tell you what that felt like, but i knew nothing would ever give me that again, except when i read it-
i remember the first book i ever read, and how comfortable i was with books...portland loves bookworms, powells is still the greatest book store in the world...and i will always love things about life there, but i can never go there.not until these storms of old loves pass.

reason is over rated, as is logic and common sense-i much prefer the passions of a crazy old woman, cats and dogs and jungle foliage- tropic rain-and a defined sense of who brings the stars up at night and the sun up in the morning---

this is really a sweet trip down memory lane, you mark it it well with bread crumbs that the birds somehow missed.....you jogged my memory when you mentioned the spooky art of writing back to an interview mailer gave on npr when the book came out, coincidentally on his 80 th birthday .....he was so insightful, and now I think after typing this I will visit amazon and pick up a used copy.....one thing that stood out was, he firmly believed that a good novel should not be plot driven, but character driven....what a wonderful experience for you to have had this intimate moment.....nice work csoul...

funny- my ideas about john irving changed too-but the intensity of energy in his hands and eyes- and what i was thinking before i got there...... asking him...how when you feel your hands wont stop typing, and then it as if when you are done u are wrought,....but it ended in his eyes, he gave me my answer...and i am glad i could inspire in anyway- i am still reading it...

Re: portland,wordstock
i had such big ideas about writing and painting, going to portland state, living in the painting lab between serious classes.that fatal AA meeting on campus, and the vulnerable moment of weakness, when you want a man and you know he smells like disaster, but you throw the dice.the rush of seeing if it will work, moving in together before you even know each other, with the idea that love will solve all problems....romance is a real thing---but i am far too afraid to try again....yet i know..that i never stop loving ---even when i want to=
