white bird

Post by saw » March 8th, 2014, 6:25 pm

I can hear Its A Beautiful Day in the distance
its a house party at Mary Lou's and the White Bird
is flying high, above the room, and well
everyone is

that electric violin always haunts me,
seductively insisting I follow, it has real power
inside its beauty, strong as any muscles
those notes intoxicate my sensibilities

they waft through the congregation,
I close my eyes, see musical hands open the door
to the golden cage, I see the white bird
in all her majesty as she soars up and away

her flapping wings a morse-like code
tapped out in my head, and the message
stands tall like an ancient monolith,
our minds are free....to go anywhere we want
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

Saw, a wonderfully written piece on one of my own favorites from "the day"... "It's a Beautiful Day" was started by David LaFlamme, the violinist of whom you mentioned. Not sure of the date (late 60's?), but I was fortunate to have seen the group live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco... and needless to say, they were just as good live as they were recorded.

I turned my now wife onto their first LP, she never having any clue who they were, and thru my insistence, we found it locally. Her first listening was as memorable as was my first time, so wonderful a sound that was truly original.

Thx, for the flashback!

hey mtmynd...glad to find another Its a Beautiful Day lover....that album with White Bird, titled Its a Beautiful Day ( same as their name) is a real gem. Hot Summer Day, Time Is, Wasted Union Blues....such good stuff...what a time for music...many classically trained musicians like LaFlamme brought their unique gifts to the scene in ways that blew our minds.....another electric violinist from your coast was Papa John Creach that played with Jefferson Airplane and Starship as well as Hot Tuna...I was traveling the US in my VW, and got to see Hot Tuna for free, mid seventies, in San Francisco...in the park....what a time...always wanted to catch something at the Fillmore, but never made it....there were certain points in my music life that were so profound, like the first time I heard Cream or Hendrix, but also these random memories like Its a Beautiful Day at a party in Key West.....wrote a poem about it...ha ha
