dir. Wim Wenders
"Time heals.
but what if time were the illness?"
German film, mid-1980s.
Wings of desire
Wings of desire
I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.
the film is pure poetry, visually, and textually (for those like me that read subtitles). these lines occur as one of the many thoughts read from the mind of the people as observed by an angel.
i heard that there was a hollywood remake of the film called City of Angels; cannot imagine how awful that must have turned out -- in order to make a popular marketable movie no doubt hollywood would have to change evrything that is interesting about the film, including its strangeness, in addition to the fact that to remake the movie in a different location/setting from Berlin is to totally transform it and lose its historical appeal (e.g. the scenes by the Berlin wall, painted artistically; the bizarrely erie German youth nodding their heads to Nick Cave in the nightclub; the city-of-rubble and demolition aspects drawn from Italian neo-realist cinema, tho perhaps urban decay in America can achieve that as well!)
