He’d ask, but never would she answer why
she didn’t trust their been-in-love (but, yes:
he knew mistrust aside, her deepest faith—
his soul for hers— would always be the rule
for what affections she might hold as love
for varied others: standard love
to which all hopes aspire, but fail.
She’d wait, but never would his patience pale
before her infidelities, or move
by truths ejaculated love to prove,
or speak her thoughts: he is her better fool.
And through avoidance, each upon a wraith
of truer known reality sought bless
a lesser life that begged, awaited Why.
