not playing pool
not playing pool
I have been thoroughly trained
to be productive
it was beat into to me as a little boy
to work mindlessly on this-that or the other,
to volunteer for overtime, to dust
the tables with lemon pledge, mow the grass
dig the road dirt from the treads
of the tires on my pick-up truck,
on my knees with a toothbrush
I was lectured, leisure time would leave me
behind the 8 ball in the game of success,
but I wasn't a pool player
so I ignored the reference
to be productive
it was beat into to me as a little boy
to work mindlessly on this-that or the other,
to volunteer for overtime, to dust
the tables with lemon pledge, mow the grass
dig the road dirt from the treads
of the tires on my pick-up truck,
on my knees with a toothbrush
I was lectured, leisure time would leave me
behind the 8 ball in the game of success,
but I wasn't a pool player
so I ignored the reference

you may end up where you are heading

Re: not playing pool
do nothing
and leave nothing
undone!

and leave nothing
undone!

Bukowski & I dig this poem.
Re: not playing pool
funny poem - so much of what we become is how we were raised - before we know how to discriminate the world for ourselves . . .
