malbec eyes sparkle
in the dim amber of the kitchen table lamp
creamy bare shoulders glow like a new planet

I can feel the cells in my body melting
like an abandoned ice cream cone, my
brain feels like an unsolved rubik's cube
my color, my shape, morphed by her conversation

the furnace is fueled by the newness
of unknown quantities, the kettle on the stove
shrieks like a lunar wolf, the steam is

whispering from the compact player atop the refrigerator
damn, man...it's just a shared late night cup of tea
just two old retired warriors that have recycled their coats of armor,
just two veterans of the bloody relationship war of the last century

about to choose an herbal tea,
from a handmade carousel of peppermint, vanilla almond
mandarin orange, licorice, blueberry
boxes that promise vitality, better sleep, endurance

we spin the lazy susan like a new age roulette wheel,
we laugh at the bold promises made on artsy cardboard structures
