from Goethe's Faust

Verachte nur Vernunft und Wissenschaft,

des Menschen allerhöchste Kraft,

laß nur in Blend- und Zauberwerken

dich von dem Lügengeist bestärken,

so hab' ich dich schon unbedingt.


TK's translation into Englische:

"Scorn Reason and Science,

Humanity's highest craft;

permit yourself to be overcome

with the lying soul of magic and illusions,

and I have you absolutely..."

Der LuegenGeist: sort of blogland's official spiritual Entity

tho' they are clearly at war...

The seeping of magic illusions into reason and science,
or the creeping of reason and science into magic illusion.

As for "absolute(ly)"?... Well...

Perhaps. This was spoken by Mephistopheles I believe, so there are ironies a plenty. But sort of traditional if somewhat snobbish perspective: the sleep of reason produces monstas, etc. Goethe was an uptight M-thu- -f-er tho' most likely. Oppressor!

Aesthetes generally make far better nazis than do logicians; Speer sukked, but was nothing compared to the Reichmarshall. That took some wanderjahrs to understand.

My son's learning German, so he's lucky. He can read Goethe in his native language while I need to rely on translations.

Dankeschoen, WD. And that translation was via Wörterbuch, and old grammar: no googlestein involved. Goethe often makes use of unusual archaic words/forms, such as "verachte": scorn, maybe forego, condemn. (PK Dick was a great fan of Faust btw). Congratulations to your son: mastery of German is not a trivial task.

Nicht das Innen , noch das Außen,

Um mit euch und mir zu hausen.
Immer hab ich nur geschreiben,
Wie ich fühle , wie ichs meine,

My only link to other languages as I have a hard enough time speaking and writing the only language I know... English.

*shrug*... I figure if I can get a good handle on being adept at ONE language, I'll be happy with myself. Still working on it.

Twain said something like french could be learned in a few months, German not in 10 years. The nouns and articles are bad enough, then the verbs with all the prefixes, suffixes, etc. and odd syntax (by the time you get to end where the verb is, you no longer care what the sentence meant, paraphrasing Clemens). Btw,-- is the "kann" from "kennen" to know, or "koennen" to be able, can? I think its from "can," but babelfish gives it as from "know"--kennen.

And Germans (and Germanophiles), too! they make, as you say, "Far Better Nazis" than the Italian or Spanish fascisticysts!!

Cohen, an award-winning filmmaker born in Sweden of parents who fled from Nazi Germany and Austria, believes that the National Socialist horror can be comprehended as a pervasive manifestation of a perverse aesthetic doctrine: to make the world beautiful by doing violence to it. This provocative thesis, systematically explored, gives compelling pace to the film.
